About this quiz

Thirteen of the thirty NBA franchises play somewhere other than where they were founded, and several have moved more than once. The Kings hold the record with four homes before Sacramento: Rochester, Cincinnati, Kansas City-Omaha and Kansas City.

A relocation is not the same as a rename, and this quiz wants the moves. The Wizards were the Bullets in the same city, and the Bobcats became the Hornets without leaving Charlotte, so neither of those counts on its own — though Washington is on the list anyway, because the Bullets came from Baltimore and Chicago before that.

One genuine edge case is excluded. The Hornets were listed as "New Orleans/Oklahoma City" for two seasons after Hurricane Katrina, which the league's own records treat as a different home city. The franchise never permanently moved, so counting it would turn this into a question about a hurricane.

How to beat the clock

  • Every team that has ever played in Seattle, Vancouver, Buffalo, San Diego, Syracuse or Minneapolis is on this list.
  • Answer with the team's name TODAY, not what it was called when it moved.
  • Both Los Angeles teams moved there, and neither came from California.

How it works

One quiz a day, the same one for everybody — so the leaderboard is a straight comparison rather than fifteen boards with three names each. Your first attempt is the one that counts, because the game reveals every answer when the clock stops; replay as often as you like afterwards, it is pure practice and never changes your score.

Start typing and suggestions appear instantly. Submit with Enter or by clicking one — nothing is scored until you do, so you can finish typing the name you actually meant. Arrow keys move through the list.

A surname is enough when it is unambiguous — “Jordan” counts on a list with one Jordan, but a list with several Johnsons asks for the first name too. Capitalisation, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “o neal” and “O’Neal” are the same answer. Suggestions are drawn from every player in the database, so seeing a name there says nothing about whether it is on the list.
