How to play Draft Class

Draft Class is a daily NBA draft puzzle. You are given one draft year and asked for its first ten selections, one pick at a time, in order. Recalling who was in a famous class is the easy half — almost anyone can place Wade and Bosh in 2003. Saying which of them went first is the game.

The rules

The pick on the clock is highlighted; type the player who went there and submit. Correct and the draft advances to the next selection. You have three wrong guesses for the whole run, and you can pass a pick you cannot place — passing costs no guess, but the slot stays empty and you cannot come back to it. Name all ten and you have run the lottery.

Right class, wrong order

If you name somebody who was genuinely taken in the top ten but not at the pick on the clock, the game tells you so and takes a guess. That feedback is deliberate — it separates not knowing the class from not knowing the order, which are different kinds of wrong — but it never says which pick the player actually was, because that would hand over an answer you have not earned.

Which drafts come up

Every draft from 1976 onwards whose top ten contains at least six players anybody would recognise. The 1976 cutoff is not about age: until that year the NBA and the ABA drafted separately, so the top ten NBA picks of an earlier draft is a misleading question — some of the best players available were taken by ABA teams and never appear in the NBA draft record at all. Recent classes count their active players as recognisable regardless of games played, which is the only fair way to treat a rookie.

Scoring, the leaderboard and streaks

Your score is how many of the ten you named, and it goes on a daily leaderboard ranked by picks named, then by fewest wrong guesses — so nine out of ten clean beats nine out of ten with two misses. The all-time best sits beside it. Your FIRST attempt of the day is the one that counts, because the draft is revealed when the run ends and a replay would be a memory test. The board is checked server-side: the name you gave for each pick is compared against the real selection, so a score on it was really earned. Naming all ten on consecutive days also builds a streak, which is kept in your browser rather than on the board.

Tips

  • Anchor on the first pick and the player you most associate with the class, then work outwards from there.
  • A surname is enough when only one player in the top ten has it, so type less and submit sooner.
  • Pass early rather than guessing. Three wrong answers ends the run; a pass only costs you one slot.
  • International picks and high-schoolers cluster in particular eras — if a slot feels empty, consider who was not playing college basketball that year.
  • The reveal shows the drafting team as it was named that night, which is often not the franchise you would expect.
  • Passing beats guessing on the leaderboard too: wrong guesses are the tiebreak, so two players on nine picks are split by who was cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to answer the picks in order?
Yes. One pick is on the clock at a time, and that is the whole point — knowing who was in a draft class is much easier than knowing the sequence.
What happens if I pass?
The pick is left blank, the draft moves on, and no wrong guess is spent. You cannot return to a pick you passed.
Does a traded pick count for the team that made it?
The reveal shows the franchise that actually used the selection on the night, under the name it had at the time.
Why is a famous draft not showing up?
Each day uses a different class and the rotation works through every qualifying draft before any repeats, so the one you want will come round.
