About this quiz
In 2021 the NBA marked its 75th season by naming the greatest players in league history. A panel of media, former players, coaches and executives voted, and a tie meant the list ran one name long — which is why a team billed as 75 actually contains 76 players.
It spans every era, from players whose careers ended before the three-point line existed to several still active when the list was announced. That range is what makes it hard: recalling the modern half is easy, and the 1950s and 60s half is where most runs die.
How to beat the clock
- Start with the decade you know least — the modern names will still be there at the end.
- Work franchise by franchise. The Celtics and Lakers alone account for a large share of the list.
- Big men are over-represented relative to how we remember the game today.
How answers are matched
Type a full name, or just a surname when it is unambiguous — “Jordan” counts on a list with one Jordan, but a list with several Johnsons asks for the first name too. Capitalisation, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “o neal” and “O’Neal’ are the same answer. The clock starts when you do, and a correct name clears the box so you can keep typing.
