About this quiz

The MVP has been awarded every season since 1955-56, but far fewer players have won it than seasons have been played — the award concentrates heavily in a small group of all-time greats, several of whom won it three times or more.

That concentration is the whole puzzle. Naming the repeat winners gets you a long way, and the runs that fail usually fail on one-time winners from the 1970s and the late 2010s.

How to beat the clock

  • Name the multiple winners first — they cover a disproportionate share of the seasons.
  • Don't forget the one-time winners; they're where most people lose the clock.
  • Centres dominated the early decades, guards the recent ones.

How answers are matched

Type a full name, or just a surname when it is unambiguous — “Jordan” counts on a list with one Jordan, but a list with several Johnsons asks for the first name too. Capitalisation, punctuation and accents are all ignored, so “o neal” and “O’Neal’ are the same answer. The clock starts when you do, and a correct name clears the box so you can keep typing.
